David Brenner, you will be missed.

Around Valentine’s day of 2008, I had the honor of opening for David Brenner in Aspen, CO. It was a week after my father had a small stroke and was admitted into the hospital in Las Vegas, NV. When I met David, we had a kindred connection. He reminded me of my father (except David had great hair and amazing comedic timing), I reminded him of his younger sister. I learned so much about comedy that weekend from watching and listening to him and his stories. We talked a little about the struggles a comedian has with separating their personal and professional lives as my father lie in a hospital bed unsure of where he was, and I was supposed to “be funny” in front of hundreds of people. David told me “when you’re driving a car, you don’t think about watching TV, and when you’re watching TV, you don’t think about driving a car. Learn how to separate the two.” We talked about my Dad and as the weekend in Aspen ended, David told me that he was going to be in Vegas the following week and would be happy to go by and check on my Dad for me if I’d like. Since my Dad was already having some mental cognition issues, we laughed together at the thought of David Brenner walking in to my father’s hospital room to “say hi.” That might surely put him over the edge. David was such a sweet man and a brilliant comedian. I lost my Dad a month later to a massive stroke and called David and let him know how much I appreciated his love and kindness during that gig. David will truly be missed by so many. Rest in peace sweet man, continue to make the angels laugh, and please say hi to my Dad. I’m sure he’d love to meet you now.
